What is modern day Solution Focused Hypnotherapy anyway?

I must admit, when I first went in for my training a bunch of us asked the question ‘do we need to buy pocket watches?’ with a hearty giggle we were told, no. Hypnotherapy has come a long way since then.

So what does it involve? Hypnotherapy can be likened to a guided meditation. You lay or sit down in a comfortable position, eyes closed and you simply drift and dream to the sound of my voice as the mind engages with the mental-visual elements to the words I speak. Hypnotherapy works to CALM the Central Nervous System. Much like a relaxing day at the spa would or a tranquil warm bath. However its effects are much more far reaching than simple relaxation.

Surprisingly, the first part of the session involves what we call psychotherapy. In simple terms, that’s talk-therapy. I teach, reiterate ideas, use metaphors and humour to help you understand how the brain actually works. It’s funny when you realise how similar we all really are! Grasping these concepts is an important step in moving forward with any mental, physical or spiritual issue. First we need to understand why we do a thing, then how to change it.

Before we move into a hypnagogic state of focused attention and total relaxed wavering consciousness, we will set a goal together. Rather, you will and I’ll help you hone it in. If you could imagine your highest self, most functional self reading this post, what small, incremental changes would you make now to get there? During this part of the session you will pin point the area which you desire to cast growth upon; whether that’s being more proactive, gaining confidence, becoming more loving and grateful, being able to wake up with a smile, having a deep restful night’s sleep, building energy back into the body, being mindful throughout your day, meeting your weight goals and being happy with your body, managing your symptoms much more effectively or overall, being that person you want to be.

Hop on the couch ..

There are levels to hypnosis, first you’ll be taken through a relaxation of the physical senses. A lot of tension is held in the body and we need to release that tension because the more that the body is relaxed the more that the mind can relax. Think about when you’re sat down somewhere at work as opposed to when your feet are up lounging on the sofa or hammock at home!

Now you’re slowly walking down ten broad steps into a beautiful sunken garden, or lazily leaving footsteps in the sand behind you as you walk towards the shore line or in your mind’s eye you could be flying, soaring across the beaches at the Gower Peninsula in Mumbles Bay.

Nicely, comfortably relaxed, the body relaxed, the mind relaxed and blissful, imagining and creating all sorts of beautiful scenes, we can now move onto the next phase, the therapy focus. At this point what we call your Critical Conscious Factor (your busy conscious mind that does not stop thinking – ‘ah yes that!’) goes on a little voyage, sails away leaving you in peace for some time.

– Everything is safe, everything is happening for a reason. Now you should know, that here more than ever, you are in control during hypnosis. You’re not under some kind of spell, some might think: – ‘unfortunately!’ No, that would be too easy, and where’s the self empowerment that comes from – ‘poof’ – magic where nothing had to be done!? –

Once the busy monkey mind is at bay we can work on the goodies! If you imagine your mind as a pomegranate, your Critical Conscious Factor is the skin of the pomegranate – hard, often stubborn to move or change, a tough cookie to crack under normal everyday circumstances. Hypnotherapy permeates into the treasured jewels inside the fruit and works on changing their constitution. It’s important to learn here that during hypnosis your Subconscious (pomegranate jewels) will only ever use and act upon concepts that are important and resonate with you as an individual. Much like our memory, it only remembers the bits that are relevant and those obscure parts that are novel and interesting to us. So shall we make these fruits bigger, brighter!?

And that’s where the Solution Focused part comes into it. In order to change something that’s no longer serving us. We do not need to focus on the problem itself. Our focus and attention is all on the SOLUTIONS to these problems.
